Department of Health Studies

Department Statement

The Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science Studies provides a curriculum for students who wish to gain an education in health science studies as a foundation for additional professional or graduate work in several health science professions, including medicine, dentistry, hospital administration, medical technology, and physical therapy. Employment with public health agencies or institutions is also an option. All students are encouraged to work closely with an advisor in the Department of Health Studies to ensure that the courses they take will meet degree requirements.

English Composition (Select an Appropriate English Course)

Area II Core Courses

• PSYC 101 General Psychology (3 credits)
• COMM 101 Fundamentals of Speech Communication (3 credits)
• SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology (3 credits)

Area III Core Courses (Courses depend on your career goals)

• BIOL 227 Human Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits) fall and
• BIOL 228 Human Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits) spring OR
• BIOL 191 General Biology I (4 credits) and
• BIOL 192 General Biology II (4 credits)
  Recommended: A solid preparation in high-school biology, chemistry and mathematics or BIOL 100.

Mathematics (Select an Appropriate Mathematics Course)

• MATH 15 Arithmetic Review (0 credits)
• MATH 25 Elementary Algebra (0 credits)
• MATH 108 Intermediate Algebra (4 credits)
• MATH 143 College Algebra (3 credits) and
• MATH 144 Analytical Trigonometry (2 credits) or
• MATH 147 Precalculus (5 credits)

You are not required to take all of the courses listed above your first year; however, most students will choose to take between 24 and 32 credits. We highly recommend that you take Math, Biology, and English.
